Corps longiligne de section approximativement cylindrique, d'environ 13 à 18 cm de longueur pour un poids de 200 g.
La tête est large et aplatie, la bouche est orientée vers le bas (infère), elle est munie de deux barbillons labiaux. La mâchoire supérieure dépasse l'inférieure
Les nageoires ont de toutes petites taches sombres, la caudale est courte et fourchue
Couleur : le ventre est blanc, le reste du corps gris à verdâtre possède une rangée de six à douze taches sombres et claires qui courent le long des flancs.
Le goujon se déplace en bancs
