Il existe une grande diversité de cladocères et de forme. Ces crustacés de petite taille 2 ou 3 mm maximum, demande une observation soutenue pour les découvrir.
La plupart ont une carapace translucide laissant voir leurs organes internes. Un unique oeil est bien visible. Des appendices natatoires sont munis de soies pour faciliter et améliorer le déplacement.
Le thorax et l'abdomen sont soudés.
