Thalle de 15 à 30 cm de long Amas de filaments enchevêtrés flottant librement dans les lagunes Filaments non ramifiés, raides au toucher (ressemble à du fil de pêche), de couleur verte à vert jaunâtre Filaments de 0,2 à 0,5 mm de diamètre, constitués d'articles visibles à l'oeil nu A la loupe, ils apparaissent de forme cylindrique et d'une longueur égale à 1 à 2 fois le diamètre

Lagunes ou étangs littoraux.

Distribution

Cette algue est présente en : Méditerranée, mer Noire, Atlantique Nord-Est (de la Scandinavie au Cameroun), Atlantique Sud-Est (du Gabon à l'Afrique du Sud), Atlantique Ouest (du Canada à l'Argentine) et Caraïbes, océan Indien (Egypte, Maurice, Réunion, Seychelles, etc.), océan Pacifique Est et Ouest (Alaska à Chili, Corée, Japon, Chine etc.), Australie et Nouvelle Zélande.
