Taille : jusqu'à 1 mètre de diamètre Couleur : noire ou grise (intérieur blanc ou rougeâtre) Aspect : globuleuse, nombreux conules (Aspect "chair de poule"), oscules petits et nombreux inégalement répartis

Possible confusions

Eponge cornée noire Scalarispongia scalaris : facilement déchirable et oscules plus grands et moins nombreux, concentrés sur la face supérieure. Présence possible de doris céleste. Eponge fétide Sarcotragus foetidus : surface plus irrégulière, conules plus grands, souvent recouverte d'épibiontes Ircinie sombre Ircinia oros : sphérique, oscules bordés d'un anneau noir
