Priacanthus hamrur (Forsskål, 1775)

AnimalsSun, big-eye, soldier and squirrel fish

Taille : 25 à 45 cm Couleur : rouge, ou argenté, ou avec des tâches ou lignes sombres , nageoires plus pâles voire jaunes Aspect : corps ovale allongé et aplati latéralement, très grands yeux rouges, museau court avec bouche oblique, nageoire caudale échancrée asymétrique (pointue et plus longue pour la partie supérieure) Observation : il change de couleur en fonction de son humeur et de son environnement.

Possible confusions

Priacanthe de Bloch ou Beauclaire pivoine (Priacanthus blochii) : nageoire caudale arrondie et symétrique, Soleil (Heteropriacanthus cruentatus) : tâches sombres sur ses nageoires ce qui n'est jamais le cas du Gros-yeux commun.

Fonds rocheux, coralliens, lagons, pentes externes, surplombs Zone de 5 et 250 m

Distribution

Indo-Pacifique, de la mer Rouge à la pointe de l'Afrique du Sud jusqu'à la Polynésie française, et au nord jusqu'au sud du Japon et vers le sud jusqu'à l'Australie
