C'est un perroquet reconnaissable à son bec corné. Poisson de taille variable pouvant atteindre 30 cm. Le mâle est gris et plus gros que les femelles. Les femelles sont de couleur rouge et jaune avec le tour de l'oeil jaune et l'arrière de la tête gris, mais la partie rouge peut être rose pâle .
