Il se rencontre sur les fonds rocheux mais aussi dans les herbiers de posidonies. De surface à 30 m de profondeur en général, un peu plus bas l'hiver.

Poulpe commun à 8 tentacules munis de 2 rangées de ventouses. Les plus grands peuvent atteindre 2 m d'envergure et 3 kg. Le poulpe aime se constituer une maison dans une cavité en mettant de nombreuses coquilles vides de bivalves devant son trou. La femelle pond dans son trou et garde les oeufs jusqu'à l'éclosion. Quand le poulpe a peur il lâche un nuage d'encre.
Remarque :
Le poulpe peut avoir envie de jouer avec le plongeur et le toucher avec ses tentacules mais il est inutile de le solliciter s'il refuse le contact, il pourrait être stressé
