Taille 80 cm jusqu'à 1,20 m Il nait femelle puis devient mâle (protogyne) Corps ovoïde de couleur marron avec des tâches claires blanches-jaunâtres, une seule nageoire dorsale souvent repliée Tête massive avec de grosses lèvres et des yeux proéminents Queue arrondie avec le bord blanc La couleur peut changer son l'environnement et sa maturité sexuelle

Possible confusions

Il peut être confondu avec le mérou blanc Epinephelus aeneus, le mérou gris Epinephelus caninus, la badèche Epinephelus costae, le mérou royal Mycteroperca rubra et le cernier Polyprion americanus.
