Taille : entre 25 et 30 cm (jusqu'à 45cm) Couleur : argenté avec des 7 à 9 bandes verticales noires Aspect : ovale, comprimé latéralement, opercules encadrés de noir, bout de la nageoire caudale noir, base des nageoires pectorales et base de la caudale noires

Possible confusions

Avec le Sparaillon, dont la tache sur la nageoire caudale est plus nette et forme un anneau Avec le Sar à museau pointu, mais qui a un museau pointu et bandes verticales plus nombreuses
