Irish moss 

Chondrus crispus Stackhouse, 1797

PlantsErect thalli
Algue rouge buissonnante jusqu'à 22 cm de haut, d'aspect assez polymorphe, présentant usuellement une fronde aplatie disposée en éventail, régulièrement dichotomique, à l'extrémité arrondie, d'aspect lisse et de consistance membraneuse à cartilagineuse. Le stipe aplati est attaché au substrat par un crampon en forme de disque. La couleur varie du rouge sombre au violet, marron clair ou jaune. Les jeunes individus peuvent présenter une iridescence bleue-violette.

Possible confusions

Avec la gigartine Mastocarpus stellatus qui présente une fronde plus épaisse incurvée latéralement en forme de gouttière et de texture rugueuse.

Biotope / Habitat

Algue commune sur les substrats rocheux, de l'estran jusqu'à 24 m de fond.

Distribution

Atlantique NE (du Portugal au N des Iles Britanniques), Manche, Mer du Nord, Atlantique NW (du NE des États-Unis au Canada, Islande).
